Eastern Algarve has a lot to offer for enthusiastic bird lovers, with a large diversity of birds throughout the whole year. In the autumn and in the spring there are many migratory birds. Species such as the Bluethroat, Royal Spoonbill and the Flamingo stay in the Algarve during the winter months.
During the summer
you have the chance to spot the following species: European bee-eater, Golden Orioles and Fig birds, European Roller, Red-headed Shrike and the Moorish Nightjar.
Throughout the year, exotic species such as the White Stork, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Avocet, Hoopoe, Azure-winged Magpie, Sardinian Warbler and the Common Waxbill can also be spotted. The Algarve is also the only place in Europe where you can find the Western Swamphen. This special bird has been chosen as a symbol for the Ria Formosa nature park.
