This beach is the nearest beach – only a 5-10 minute drive from Casa Verdazul. This beach also has the Blue Flag status and is clean and child-friendly. From the parking lot you can walk approximately 1 km to the beach through the nature reserve Ria Formosa. Or you take the small, open train that brings the beachgoers back and forth all day long. The train is for the children especially good fun.
The beach is part of the long Ilha de Tavira and is located just west of Santa Luzia. For the energetic walker or runner it is possible to reach the beach of Tavira from Barril.
There used to be a tuna factory at the beach of Barril. The building is still there and has been successfully restored. Approximately 80 fishermen used to live with their families in this small village from April to September, without electricity and water. The cemetery of anchors on the beach is a remnant and tribute from this time. The cottages have been converted into shops, restaurants, bars and other beach facilities.
